Affiliate disclosure. The partner link in the masthead and in the band beside the copy on this page is a sponsored link to a partner operator, and this site may be paid if you open an account through it, at no extra cost to you. It carries rel="sponsored noopener" and opens in a new tab. A desk about the line a charge prints should not leave its own funding unsaid: one link funds the site, no bank, operator, processor or person is named, rated or recommended anywhere on it, and it prints no real descriptor.
The Unmatched Line / the timing
a pending line is not a charge

Pending, posted and reversed

A bank statement shows a payment twice in its life: once as a pending authorisation, which reserves the money, and once as a posted line, when the money actually moves. They can differ in amount, and the pending one can vanish. Reading a statement without knowing which of the two a line is produces most of the false alarms about a charge that appeared before or after it should have.

Direct answer

A pending line is an authorisation that reserves money and a posted line is the charge itself; they are the same payment shown twice. Of 300 sampled pending lines, the median stayed pending 3.4 days, 210 settled at the same amount and 90 settled at a different one, and some fall away entirely when the authorisation is not completed.

What a pending line is and is not
  • It reserves money; it does not move it, and it can be released.
  • It can settle at a different amount from the one it reserved.
  • It can fall away entirely if the payment is never completed.
  • It is not a second charge when a posted line appears beside it.
  • Its date is the day you paid, which is often before the posted date.
Pending windows vary by rail, by merchant and by bank, and this desk prints invented figures. It is not advice on any particular payment, and it names no real bank or rail.
