The partner link in the masthead and in the band beside the copy on this page is a sponsored link to a partner operator, and this site may be paid if you open an account through it, at no extra cost to you. It carries rel="sponsored noopener" and opens in a new tab. A desk about the line a charge prints should not leave its own funding unsaid: one link funds the site, no bank, operator, processor or person is named, rated or recommended anywhere on it, and it prints no real descriptor.
The Unmatched Line / the match
placing a line on a transaction

Placing the line on a transaction

Matching a statement line back to a transaction is a lookup with four inputs: the date, the reference, the amount and the name, weighted in that order. Used in that order on the 680 lines that could not be placed at first sight, the method resolved 560 of them - and the 120 that stayed unmatched are the only ones that properly belong to a dispute.

Direct answer

A statement line is matched by weighting four inputs in order: the date first, then any reference, then the amount, then the name last. Applied to the 680 sampled lines that could not be placed at first sight, the method resolved 560 (82.4%) and left 120 unmatched (17.6%) - and only the 120 belong to a dispute.

The four inputs, in order
  1. The date. Narrow to the day the line posted and the day you paid; posting lags the payment by a day or two.
  2. The reference. Find the number the site issued and look for it inside the string; it is the only specific fragment.
  3. The amount. Cross-check against the settled figure, allowing for a conversion, a fee or a partial hold.
  4. The name. Use the name only to confirm, never to place the line on its own.
