The Unmatched Line / the refund
when a reversal prints under another name
The refund that arrives under a second name
A refund rarely prints the same descriptor as the charge it reverses. It is issued by whichever entity credits the money back, on its own name, often days later and sometimes for only part of the amount. That is why a reader looking for a matching credit under the original name concludes too early that they were never refunded.

what the line isA descriptor, not a name: a routing string of up to five fragments. The reference is the only one that is yours.
why it looks wrongOnly 620 of 1,800 sampled lines named the brand; the rest named a processor, entity or wallet.
what decides a disputeThe money that actually left the account. 560 of 680 unplaceable lines were placed by reading, not disputing.
Direct answer
A refund is credited by whichever entity issues it, so it usually prints a different descriptor than the charge. Of 150 sampled refunds, 96 arrived under a different name (64.0%), the mean wait was 4.8 days and 18 reversed only part of the amount - so a credit is matched to a charge by the reference and the timing, not by the name.
| signal | charge | credit |
|---|---|---|
| the name | a processor or entity | often a different processor or entity |
| the reference | the account reference | usually carries the same reference |
| the amount | the settled figure | the same figure, or less if partial |
| the date | when the charge posted | a mean 4.8 days later |
| so match on reference and date, not on name | 4 signals | |

Matching a credit
- Look for the reference, which normally survives the change of name.
- Allow the wait: a mean of 4.8 days in the sample, and longer across weekends.
- Accept that the amount can be partial; two credits can reverse one charge.
- Do not match on the name alone; the credit is issued by a different hand.
- If no credit arrives at all, the lookup has failed and the next page applies.
Refund timing, naming and partial reversal depend on the rail and the operator terms, and this desk prints invented figures. It is not advice on any specific refund and names no real entity.
